Healthy Pizza

I love pizza. Who ever invented it is a genius! Contrary to popular belief that pizza is a junk food no better than hamburgers and fries, this Italian delicacy is actually one of the healthiest foods around.

One of pizza’s main ingredients is tomato sauce which contains loads of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant which is known to help fight many different types of cancer. Moreover, studies reveal that processed tomatoes such as those found in pizza sauce are actually higher in lycopene than fresh tomatoes. Water evaporates during cooking and processing, leaving a higher concentration of lycopene.

Other tasty pizza ingredients with high nutritional value include onions which are rich in chromium, vitamin C, and fiber. Onions help to lower blood sugar, cholesterol as well as blood pressure. Black olives help ward off heart disease and lower cholesterol levels while red pepper are full of Vitamin C, A, and B6.

To make pizza even more healthier, get rid of the pepperoni and use white meat chicken instead. It’s full of protein, but not full of saturated fat and sodium like pepperoni. Chicken also has some good stuff like zinc and selenium (to boost your immune system) and essential B vitamins.

With the many health benefits of pizza, who says it is a junk food?
